After the Turkish state occupied Afrin in 2018, and forcibly displaced the people of Afrin to Shahba canton, UNICEF began distributing drinking water in all districts, villages, and camps for the displaced in Shahba canton, where it was responsible for filling the plastic water tanks in the villages and camps via water tanks, but it reduced the quantities of water in the districts of Tal Rifaat, Shirawa, Ahras and Al-Ahadath Al-Jidha, in 2021 it will stop distributing water throughout the region, and also reduce the percentage of water in the camps to 650 thousand litres.

It allocated 300,000 liters to the Sardam camp, 280,000 liters to the Barkhadan camp, and 45,000 liters to the Afrin, Shahba, and al-Awda camps. This was during the winter, while the amounts of water increased during the summer to 950,000 liters.

On February 15,  UNICEF completely cut off water supply to the camps.

In this context, a number of displaced people from Afrin and the municipality member of Barkhadan camp, Lilaf Sheikho, spoke to ANHA agency.

Sheikho pointed out that UNICEF had cut off water from the camps and said: “ Cutting off water will cause many crises and disasters, one of which is an increase in diseases, especially since we are approaching the summer season and there is a greater need for water.”

As for the displaced person, Sabah Tobel, she commented on UNICEF’s suspension of water distribution to the camps, saying: “We denounce what UNICEF has done, as this exacerbates our suffering, so it should have continued its work and not cut off water from us.”

The displaced person, Abdeen Hamo, said about this issue: “Cutting off water will cause major problems. People are in dire need of water. We condemn what UNICEF has done.”
