UN reports displacement of 176,000 people from Sweida

Approximately 176,000 people have been displaced from Sweida to Daraa and rural Damascus, according to the United Nations, which has warned of a catastrophic situation and continues to respond with humanitarian assistance.

Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, the UNHCR Representative in Syria, stated that the number of displaced people from Sweida to Daraa and the Damascus countryside is estimated at around 176,000, following attacks by forces of the Syrian transitional government and allied militias on the city since the 13th of this month.

In a post on his account on the "X" platform on Friday, Vargas Llosa said that the situation in Daraa and rural Damascus is catastrophic, based on an assessment conducted by UNHCR in cooperation with other UN agencies.

He added that many people were forced "to walk on foot to reach safe areas, and are now completely dependent on humanitarian aid," noting that UNHCR, alongside its humanitarian partners, has intensified its efforts through "distributing emergency supplies, providing protection services, psychological support, and specialized care for children."

He explained that UNHCR and its partners have managed to distribute emergency supplies to 3,570 displaced persons, and have sent 2,500 emergency kits to Daraa and rural Damascus, and another 2,000 kits to Sweida.

Vargas Llosa also noted that UNHCR continues to provide essential services, including emergency psychological support and child protection activities, through its community centers in the affected areas, stressing that the agency "will maintain its presence in Sweida throughout the emergency."

He emphasized the need for humanitarian aid to reach affected populations, and that “safe access for humanitarian workers is crucial to saving lives.”
