UN concerned about escalating violence in rural Damascus, As-Suwayda

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria expressed his deep concern about the escalating violence in Jaramana and Sahnaya. He also noted that the spread of violence toward As-Suwayda Governorate threatens the safety and security of civilians and exacerbates the fragility of the existing humanitarian situation.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, said today that he is deeply concerned about the escalating violence in rural Damascus and condemned the civilian casualties.

He added, in a statement, that "the spread of violence toward As-Suwayda Governorate threatens the safety and security of civilians, exacerbates the fragility of the existing humanitarian situation, and jeopardizes hard-won gains."

The UN official stressed that humanitarian and medical workers should not be targeted under any circumstances, as this constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

Abdulmoula called on all parties to exercise restraint and take measures to protect civilians and humanitarian workers.

The death toll from clashes in Jaramana and Sahnaya in rural Damascus has risen to 74 people in less than 48 hours, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
