Tom Barrack: Kurds' sacrifices, steadfastness played pivotal role in defending Syria

US Special Envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, posted on his X-platform page about the recent agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian Interim Government.

Barrack stated that the announcement of a comprehensive agreement between the SDF and the Interim Government represents, in his words, "a significant milestone in Syria's journey toward national reconciliation, unity, and lasting stability." He mentioned that "this carefully negotiated step, which builds on previous frameworks and recent de-escalation efforts, reflects a shared commitment to inclusivity, mutual respect, and the collective dignity of all Syrian communities."

Barrack noted that for the Interim Government, "this agreement demonstrates a firm commitment to genuine national partnership and inclusive governance by facilitating the gradual integration of military, security, and administrative structures into unified state institutions, while ensuring opportunities for senior SDF representatives to contribute at the highest levels. The agreement affirms the principle that Syria's strength stems from embracing diversity and meeting the legitimate aspirations of all its peoples. This approach not only strengthens sovereignty over all its territory but also sends a clear message of openness and fairness to the international community."

Barrack added, "For the Kurdish people, whose exceptional sacrifices and unwavering resilience have played a pivotal role in defending Syria against extremism and protecting vulnerable populations, this moment holds special significance. The recent implementation of Presidential Decree No. 13, which restores full Syrian citizenship to those previously subjected to historical exclusion, recognizes Kurdish as a national language alongside Arabic, allows its teaching in relevant fields, and enshrines protection against discrimination, as this is considered a transformative step toward equality and belonging. These measures rectify long-standing grievances, affirm the central role of Kurds in the Syrian nation, and open up prospects for their full participation in building a secure, prosperous, and inclusive future."

Barrack continued, "Based on this shared objective, both sides have taken bold steps; the Syrian government by expanding genuine integration and rights, and the Kurdish communities by adopting a unified framework that honors their contributions and promotes the common good."

In closing, Tom Barrack emphasized that these developments, taken together, pave the way for rebuilding institutions, restoring trust, attracting the investments necessary for reconstruction, and achieving lasting peace for all Syrians.
