Tel Tamr commemorates Martyrs’ Day with renewed commitment to freedom, justice

On the occasion of May 18, Martyrs’ Day, the Martyrs’ Families Council in Tel Tamr organized a large gathering at the council hall, attended by dozens of martyrs’ relatives, alongside members of civil society institutions, to commemorate the martyrs of freedom and honor their sacrifices.

The meeting began with a minute of silence in tribute to the souls of the martyrs. Afterwards, Serbest Rezan, an administrator in the Tel Tamr Council, delivered a speech stressing the great moral status martyrs occupy in the collective conscience of society. He noted that the sacrifices they made formed the foundation for protecting the region from threats and for consolidating the values of freedom and coexistence among its various communities.

Rezan also addressed the significance of May 18 in the history of the Kurdistan Freedom Movement, describing it as a day to remember the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during different stages of the struggle, particularly inside Turkish prisons during the 1980s.

He affirmed that the Kurdistan Freedom Movement was built upon sacrifice and the spirit of selflessness, recalling the names of several activists who became symbols of the Kurdish struggle, including Haqi Qarar, whose contributions helped sustain the march toward freedom despite policies of repression and denial.

The gathering concluded with the screening of a documentary highlighting the journey of the martyrs of freedom, while participants reiterated their determination to continue working in a spirit of unity and solidarity and to uphold the values of freedom and justice for which the martyrs gave their lives.
