"Education in Kurdish is our legitimate right"

The Syrian National Students Movement issued a statement on Monday on the occasion of May 15th (the Kurdish Language Day), which was read by the student Bashar Shahin in front of the University of Kobani building, with the participation of dozens of students.

The statement affirmed that Syria, throughout its history, has been a homeland rich in diverse identities, ethnicities, and languages, and that each language is a cultural and human treasure that contributes to preserving the existence and identity of its groups.

It added, "We, the Kurdish people, have lived in Syria for thousands of years, and we affirm that the Kurdish language is our mother tongue; it is not merely a means of communication, but an essential part of our identity and culture."

The statement emphasized that "all citizens have the right to education and administration in their mother tongue."

The students concluded their statement by affirming that the right to education in the Kurdish language in schools and universities is a legitimate right that must be guaranteed and reinforced.
