Taliban members raid, close Women’s Language Centers

Over the past two days, the Taliban has carried out raids on several language learning centers in the Afghan city of Herat and ordered them to shut down for teaching women.

Sources from Herat told the Women’s News Agency (NUJINHA) that Taliban members stormed a number of foreign language education centers in recent days and ordered their closure because they were teaching women.

This move, which came just two days after the Taliban threatened to arrest teachers for educating women, has sparked concern among families and students. Private education centers had been among the few remaining opportunities for women to continue their education following the sweeping restrictions imposed by the Taliban.

Since seizing power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the Taliban has enforced the harshest restrictions on women. The closure of schools beyond sixth grade, exclusion from universities, and the shutdown of private education centers have severely obstructed the education of millions of Afghan women and girls.
