Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal calls for mass peaceful protests tomorrow

In a recorded statement, Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal called for taking to the streets in mass peaceful demonstrations to denounce the reality currently faced by Alawites in Syria. He emphasized that what is happening is not an isolated incident, but rather a war of extermination and killings based on identity, stressing that they do not want a civil war in Syria but instead seek a “political federalism.”

Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal, Head of the Supreme Alawite Islamic Council in Syria and the Diaspora, called for large-scale peaceful demonstrations to condemn the ongoing violence.

He said that what they are experiencing today is not a passing event, but a systematic war of extermination being carried out against members of the Alawite community in full view of the world, describing what is happening as “killing based on identity.”

Addressing the international community and decision-makers, he stated:
“Silence over these crimes means nothing but more killing and collapse. The continuation of this situation without the implementation of swift, radical solutions and the imposition of international protection will only deepen the destruction they seek.”

He called on Alawites to take part in mass peaceful marches to reject the killings, and urged “every free and honorable person from the rest of the components” to stand with them and support their demands. He stressed that they do not want a civil war, but rather a political federal system, adding:
“Our appointment is tomorrow, Sunday, from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm.”

Sheikh Ghazal Ghazal’s statement comes following the terrorist bombing that occurred at the Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque in the Wadi Al-Dhahab neighborhood of the city of Homs, which resulted in the deaths of a number of civilians, including children.
