Shahrazad Cinema in Qamishlo faces demolition risk

The “Shahrazad” summer cinema, located in the center of Qamishlo, is facing demolition and removal after years of no longer receiving audiences, as preparations are reportedly underway for a new urban development project on its site, according to information obtained by our agency from individuals interested in the cinema sector.

The cinema was founded in 1940 and continued to welcome audiences until 2000. It became known for its screenings held during the summer season, earning the name “summer cinema,” and over decades became one of the city’s most prominent cultural and recreational landmarks.

Filmmakers, intellectuals, and cultural activists consider Shahrazad Cinema part of Qamishlo’s collective memory and cultural heritage, calling for its preservation and restoration instead of demolition, and for it to be turned into a cultural landmark that serves future generations.

Over the years, the cinema served as a gathering place for the city’s residents, hosting film screenings and bringing families and young people together during summer evenings. It remains in the memory of many residents as scenes of children and youths climbing its outer walls to watch films for free, reflecting an aspect of the social and cultural life that Qamishlo experienced during that era.
