SDC Co-chair : No peace or stability without NE Syria’s engagement

The General Council of the Syrian Democratic Council held the exceptional meeting in the city of Hasaka, attended by Co-chairs Layla Qaraman and Mahmoud Al-Meslet, as well as council members, political leaders, party heads, and representatives from civil society organizations and democratic forces affiliated with the Council.

The meeting opened with a minute of silence, followed by a comprehensive review of political developments in Syria and the region. The Co-chairs emphasized the need to enhance the Council’s political and organizational performance, strengthening its role as an active national component in shaping the country’s future.

In his intervention, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Meslet explained that the upcoming phase is critical for shaping Syria’s future, stressing that the Council operates in a spirit of consensus, away from hostility or exclusion. He reiterated that there can be no peace or stability without an effective role for North and East Syria.

He clarified that the SDC is not an obstacle to any agreement; rather, it is a cornerstone of political dialogue and plays a broader and deeper role as a strategic partner with Damascus and an active member of the international coalition. This, he said, requires the Council to demonstrate the highest degrees of flexibility and responsibility in facing emerging challenges to contribute to enhancing stability and building comprehensive peace in Syria.

He pointed to the importance of recent government visits, including a delegation from the Ministry of Education to areas under the Autonomous Administration, as positive signs for building bridges of trust.

He also called for drafting new strategies to strengthen ties with Arab countries, and stressed the importance of boosting media efforts to clarify the Council’s vision both internally and externally.

For her part, Layla Qaraman delivered a deep political analysis of the regional scene, stating that geopolitical conflicts are redrawing the contours of the region, with their effects becoming increasingly evident in Syria.

Qaraman criticized the absence of serious national mobilization and warned that the prevailing silence and lack of national stances deepen the Syrian tragedy. She also warned of the growing hate speech targeting North and East Syria, calling for a wise response to this dangerous media escalation.

She affirmed that the SDC is the true voice representing the aspirations of Syrians, and that its goal is not confrontation with Damascus, but rather the development of bold national understandings based on inclusive political foundations.

The meeting included in-depth discussions on the importance of activating internal tracks and engaging with the Arab region, which were seen as essential conditions for the success of any national project.

Participants also addressed the agreement signed between the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, and the head of the Syrian Transitional Government, Ahmad Al-Shar’a, describing it as a foundation that can be built upon to ensure stability and enhance Syrian-Syrian understanding.

The attendees reaffirmed their rejection of exclusion and stressed the importance of guaranteeing the rights of all components within a unified and just Syrian state.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the SDC reaffirmed its commitment to continue collective and responsible action to enhance its political standing and move forward in supporting the path of a comprehensive political solution that achieves lasting peace and rebuilds Syria on the foundations of partnership, pluralism, and justice.
