Red Cross: The humanitarian situation in Sweida is extremely worrying

Following a visit to Sweida this week, the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) delegation, Stéphane Sakalian, announced that the humanitarian situation remains "extremely worrying," despite the ceasefire in Sweida having been in effect for more than ten days.

Sakalian emphasized that the local population is suffering from severe shortages of food, water, and medicine, and that the aid that has recently arrived does not meet minimum needs.

He said, "Twenty-seven trucks loaded with essential supplies arrived in the area earlier this week, but they are insufficient given the scale of the crisis."

He pointed out that the population's demands go beyond relief aid, but also include the restoration of public services such as electricity and ensuring security and stability in the region.

He emphasized the need to "restore a minimum level of trust between the various parties" as a pivotal step toward a comprehensive solution.

Sakalian emphasized that the solution in Sweida cannot be solely humanitarian, but must be primarily political, and noted the continuing kidnappings of civilians.

He also announced the International Committee of the Red Cross's readiness to mediate and provide assistance, if appropriate conditions exist, to facilitate the release of the kidnapped and missing persons.
