Yesterday, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) announced its withdrawal from the Southern Kurdistan government and its refusal to recognize parliament, following a special party meeting.

In a statement issued following a session of the South Kurdistan Parliament and the reactions and remarks that followed, the General Council of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) stressed the importance of holding parliamentary sessions and forming a government. It noted that delays in the political process had raised concerns about a potential constitutional and legal vacuum that could negatively affect the achievements of the Kurdish people in Southern Kurdistan.

The statement said the political developments placed both Kurdish parties before a shared historic responsibility to protect the achievements of the Kurdish people and preserve the region's stability and political and constitutional standing.

The party stressed that Kurdish national unity, dialogue, mutual understanding and consensus were national and historic necessities, particularly amid the escalating crises, wars and challenges facing Kurdistan and the region. It warned that any unilateral political steps could weaken the Kurdish position in Southern Kurdistan, Iraq and Kurdistan as a whole.

The General Council called on all Kurdish parties to act with a sense of national and historic responsibility and overcome their differences through dialogue, fraternity and mutual understanding, in a way that ensures the continued functioning of constitutional and democratic institutions and preserves the unity of Southern Kurdistan.

It also emphasized the need to reach a political consensus that would allow regular parliamentary sessions to resume and a national unity government to be formed with the participation of all political forces, reflecting the will and aspirations of the people of the Kurdistan Region and safeguarding their achievements.

Concluding its statement, the PYD affirmed its readiness to make every effort and launch initiatives aimed at bringing political forces closer together and reaching an agreement. It stressed that Kurdish unity and political understanding were essential to protecting achievements and addressing the challenges of the current phase.
