PYD and K.Star announce that they will run in municipal elections with joint list

Today, the Democratic Union Party PYD and Kongra Star in the city of Hasaka issued a statement to public opinion, in which they announced their alliance and to run in the municipal council elections with a joint list, and called on the general public to participate in it.

The statement reads:

The Supreme Elections Commission in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria announced last month that the co-chair elections for municipalities and municipal councils would be held on May 30, 2024, and within the framework of preparing for this electoral process, we, the Democratic Union Party and the Kongra Star Party, through joint discussions, reached an understanding regarding the points related by  running in the elections, a common vision was reached regarding the mechanism for identifying candidates, forming a joint list and working together to achieve a democratic municipality.

On this basis, we want to share with our people and public opinion the points of understanding that we have reached. As is known, the democratic community municipality is one of the basic pillars of local administrations and the most important element in democratic social organization.”

And added in the statement: “According to the social contract and the laws of theAANES, the election of the co-chair of the municipality and the municipal council by the people will enhance the Autonomous-administration for the people.

In light of the continuing war in Syria and the crisis and attacks against the Autonomous Administration region, we consider holding municipal elections in the Autonomous Administration regions as evidence of determination and resolve in achieving and consolidating the democratic system that relies on the will of the people.”

And noted: “On this basis, we, in the Democratic Union Party and Kongra Star, announce that we will participate in the municipal elections on May 30, by forming an alliance based on the principles of popular, democratic, environmental municipality and women’s freedom. With this type of alliance, we emphasize the importance of the role of parties and women’s movements in promoting and consolidating true democracy. At the same time, our alliance expresses the importance of women’s pioneering role in building and achieving a municipality that serves the culture of freedom and equality.”

And added: “We invite our members and supporters to participate in the primary elections so that we can nominate qualified people who express our ambitions to achieve an environmental, democratic municipality that calls for freedom and equality.

We believe that the municipal elections process that will be held on May 30, 2024 will be achieved within a democratic framework, in a fair and transparent manner, and that the municipalities of the NE Syria region will be an example that expresses the will and ambition of the people in NE Syria. On this basis, we offer our respect to our people, to all women, and to public opinion.”
