preparations underway for International Conference in New York on al-Hol Camp

The announcement follows an official invitation from the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended to the Lebanese Foreign Ministry to participate in the conference. According to the ministry’s statement, the event will be held on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings and will focus on mechanisms to address the complex issue of ISIS-affiliated families. This includes repatriation to their countries of origin, legal prosecution, rehabilitation, and social reintegration.

Although the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)—the body directly responsible for managing al-Hol camp, located east of Hasakah city in al-Jazira canton has yet to issue any official statement or confirm its participation in the upcoming conference, its role remains central to the camp’s administration.

According to the latest figures from camp management, al-Hol currently houses approximately 13,000 Iraqis, 15,000 Syrians, and an additional 6,385 foreign ISIS-affiliated women and children, making it one of the most dangerous camps worldwide.

Since 2021, the AANES has facilitated repatriation flights for Iraqi residents of al-Hol who wish to return home, coordinating closely with the Iraqi government and the International Coalition against ISIS.
