Political parties call on interim government to reconsider wheat pricing

Eight political parties have expressed their rejection of the Syrian Interim Government's decision to set the purchase price of a ton of durum wheat at 46,000 Syrian pounds (in the new currency). They pointed out that this price does not cover the high production costs, given the significant increase in the prices of fuel, fertilizers, seeds, irrigation supplies, and transportation.

The parties emphasized that the set price threatens to inflict direct losses on farmers and weakens their ability to continue cultivating strategic crops in the coming seasons. They warned of negative repercussions on food security and economic and social stability in the country.

They noted that the decision is particularly dangerous in Hasaka Governorate, which produces about half of Syria's wheat crop and relies heavily on the agricultural sector as a primary source of economic activity. They deemed the current price "unrealistic," failing to take into account production costs, inflation rates, and the rising prices of goods and services.

The parties called on the Interim Government to reconsider the decision and adopt a new purchase price of no less than 50 US cents per kilogram, ensuring a fair profit margin for farmers and supporting the sustainability of the agricultural sector and local production.

The parties are:

4. The Kurdistan Democratic Peace Party.

5. Al-Wafaaq Syrian Kurdish Party.

6. The Azadi Movement of Kurdistan in Syria.

7. The Kurdish Democratic Left Party in Syria.

8. The Kurdish Progressive Democratic Party in Syria.
