May 27 declared first day of Eid al-Adha in Syria

The National Crescent Observation Committee confirmed the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent moon on Sunday evening, indicating that Tuesday, May 27, will mark the first day of Eid al-Adha.

The National Crescent Observation Committee in Syria announced that the crescent moon of Dhul-Hijjah was officially sighted on Sunday evening, confirming that today, May 18, is the first day of the Islamic month. Accordingly, Tuesday, May 26, will be observed as the Day of Arafah, while Wednesday, May 27, will be the first day of Eid al-Adha.

The announcement followed an astronomical observation event held in cooperation with the Syrian Astronomical Society, during which the crescent moon was clearly observed through telescopes from Mount Qasioun overlooking the capital, Damascus.

On February 14, Ahmad al-Sharaa issued Decree No. 36 of 2026, establishing the “National Crescent Observation Committee.”

The committee is tasked with observing and verifying crescent moons to determine the beginnings of Islamic months, particularly Ramadan, Shawwal, and Dhul-Hijjah, before submitting its findings to the relevant authorities for official announcement.
