Over 1,000 activists call for Sharifa Mohammadi's unconditional release 

According to the Women’s News Agency (NUJINHA), over a thousand civil society activists, along with women’s rights, labor, and political activists in Iran, issued a statement demanding the annulment of the death sentence against political activist Sharifa Mohammadi, who is detained at Lakan Prison in Rasht, and calling for her immediate and unconditional release.

The statement explained that Sharifa Mohammadi, who has spent nearly twenty months in detention, engaged exclusively in peaceful activities, yet she was sentenced to death following a closed trial described as unfair.

The signatories emphasized that the activist was subjected to torture and psychological pressure to extract forced confessions and was coerced under threat to withdraw a complaint she had filed regarding mistreatment. The statement also noted that her arrest was arbitrary, carried out by the Ministry of Intelligence, during which she was transferred between several detention centers and subjected to severe beatings while blindfolded.

The Revolutionary Court in Rasht issued the death sentence against her in June 2024 during a brief closed session, in which she appeared via video without being allowed to defend herself. The ruling was based on accusations related to her peaceful activities in supporting female prisoners, opposing the death penalty, and participating in a coordination committee to help establish labor organizations.

Sharifa Mohammadi, 45 years old, is one of Iran’s most prominent activists advocating for women’s and workers’ rights. The ruling has sparked a widespread wave of solidarity and international calls for its annulment.
