More than 16,000 patients in Gaza await evacuation

The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Sunday that the organization's teams are continuing their work inside the Gaza Strip to rebuild the collapsed health system and provide life-saving care to patients amidst dire humanitarian conditions.

Ghebreyesus explained that more than 16,500 patients in Gaza, including about 4,000 children, are awaiting evacuation to receive urgent treatment outside the Strip, noting that the remaining hospitals are operating at many times their capacity amidst a severe shortage of equipment, medicines, and supplies.

Ghebreyesus thanked more than 30 countries that have agreed to receive the patients, stressing that saving their lives requires accelerating evacuation operations and opening more safe corridors. He called for the opening of all evacuation routes, including those leading to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, stressing that "health and recovery cannot wait" given the rapidly deteriorating health situation in the Gaza Strip.
