A senior Lebanese official told Reuters on Friday that Lebanon intends to participate in a meeting next week in Washington with representatives from the United States and Israel to discuss a ceasefire, noting that the date for the talks has not yet been set.

The official explained that Lebanon considers a ceasefire a prerequisite for further talks aimed at reaching a broader agreement with Israel, according to the agency.

European and Arab countries are exerting diplomatic pressure on Israel to prevent it from renewing its raids on Beirut, a Western diplomatic source told AFP on Friday, two days after deadly Israeli strikes on the Lebanese capital.

A Western diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "There is ongoing diplomatic pressure from European countries, Gulf states, and Egypt on Israel to prevent a resumption of Israeli attacks on Beirut after Black Wednesday."
