Lebanese lawyer: YPJ must be recognized as fundamental force

Lebanese lawyer and human rights activist Farah Abdullah expressed her support for the YPJ, affirming that their experience represents a pivotal milestone in women’s struggle for freedom and dignity.

In her statement, Farah—who is a lawyer within the National Federation of Workers’ and Employees’ Unions in Lebanon—explained that what YPJ fighters have achieved goes beyond the military dimension, reflecting a fundamental role for women in protecting society and confronting terrorism.

She emphasized that the fighters have proven their ability to be at the core of defense and protection dynamics, noting that this role is not temporary but has become a fundamental pillar in the broader path of social struggle.

She stressed that any attempt to sideline or disregard the role of the YPJ, particularly within the context of any future political settlement, including potential agreements with the interim government in Syria, amounts to a denial of women’s rights and their struggle.

She called for the recognition of the YPJ as an essential component in any forthcoming political framework, while maintaining their independent structure and identity as a women’s organization.

From a legal perspective, she affirmed that ensuring women’s participation in protection and defense institutions is a legitimate right derived from the principles of justice and equality, not an exception.

She also urged all women’s and human rights organizations to adopt a clear stance supporting this direction and to work toward solidifying women’s participation across political processes, in line with their real role in building a more just and balanced society.
