Kongra Star leader Hevi Suleiman dies after long battle with cancer

Hevi Suleiman, a national figure and member of the Kongra Star Coordination in Afrin and Shahba, passed away after a long battle with cancer. The late activist was among the first teachers of the Kurdish language and made major contributions to the cultural and national arenas.

The veteran activist passed away today in the city of Qamishlo after a long struggle with cancer. She was among the pioneers who taught the Kurdish language in Aleppo in 2010 and 2011, and was one of the founding members of the Kurdish Language Institution (SZK).

Born in Mobatê, in the occupied Afrin region, Suleiman was 62 years old and a mother of seven. She held several positions within the Autonomous Administration and previously served as a member of the Alevi Council in Afrin.

Hevi Suleiman was well known for her extensive activism in both the cultural and women’s movements. She participated in the founding of the Syrian Women’s Council, was an active member of the Kongra Star Coordination, and also served on the Founding Council of the Democratic Federation of Northern Syria.

Her passing represents a great loss to the cultural and national community, as she was regarded as an icon in defending Kurdish language and identity, and a symbol of dedication and social engagement.
