The Executive Council of the KNK issued a statement today on the first anniversary of the assassination of conference member Deniz Cudat Bolbun (Deniz Hevi) at the Congress office in the city of Hawler, on September 18, 2023.

The office of the KNK representation in the city of Hawler was subjected to an armed attack on September 18, 2023, in which conference member Deniz Cudat Bolbun was martyred, which the conference considered a major crime.

The statement said: "Security officials initially stated that the killer had been arrested, but later mentioned that he had escaped and was no longer in the Kurdistan region. Nearly a year later, and after several hearings, the Hawler Criminal Court recently sentenced the accused to life imprisonment for 27 years under Article 2 of the Anti-Terrorism Law on charges of murder and espionage."

The statement added: "Although this is a good start, until the main killer is caught and punished, and the activities of neighboring countries' intelligence agencies in the region cease, we, as the Kurdistan National Congress, will work seriously on these issues both domestically and abroad. It is also the duty of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the security apparatus to protect the safety of activists and freedom fighters in Kurdistan, and to apprehend criminals and spies and bring them to court."

The KNK stated: "As we commemorate the assassination of Deniz, who defended the homeland, the Kurdish language, and culture, Kurdistan remains under occupation and is subject to drone attacks. Terrorism has become a normal phenomenon, and civilians, women, children, and journalists are being targeted and killed daily. No one, whether a fighter or a civilian, can guarantee their life."

The KNK called on official institutions in Federal Iraq and S. Kurdistan to fulfill their constitutional and legal duties toward the land and the people, to not cooperate with the conspiracies of the occupation states, and to stand against the occupation.

The KNK said: "May the soul of the martyr Deniz, the fighter in the freedom movement and defender of Kurdish culture and language, rest in peace. From our loyalty to the memory of our martyrs, we will continue to work and keep this cause alive until the murderers and collaborators are punished.”
