Journalist: Iran-Turkey’s targeting female journalists to hide its schemes

In the wake of the popular uprising that swept Eastern Kurdistan and Iran following the killing of the young Kurdish woman, Gina Amini, in mid-September of the year 2022, at the hands of the Iranian “moral police,” the Iranian state resorted to silencing the mouths of those opposed to its rule, as it began launching repressive campaigns during which many lost their lives, while thousands of male and female protesters were imprisoned, including male and female journalists.

In late last October, an Iranian court sentenced journalists Elha Mohammadi and Nilofar Hamidi to 12 and 13 years in prison for covering the murder of the young woman, Gina Amini, and conducting interviews with her family.

Journalist Newroz Damhat said about the practices and violations of the Iranian state against male and female participants in the popular uprising (September 16, 2022) and its arrest so far of dozens of male and female journalists; These are: “The oppressive practices that targeted male and female protesters come within the framework of Iran protecting its regime based on religious fanaticism, and silencing the voices of female journalists with the aim of depriving them of their rights and foiling their uprising.”

In an exclusive interview with ANHA’s agency, Newroz Demhat confirmed that: “The Iranian regime is based on undermining women’s rights, under the name of religion and morals, and every woman who opposes its ideas and plans is arrested and her rights are violated. The best example of this is the arrest of journalists who supported the Jin, Jiyan, Azadî uprising” (“Women, life, freedom.”

She explained: “The Iranian state follows a policy that is hostile to women’s issues, and aims to break their will to seek their rights and the rights of their people.” She continued: “Every woman who is bold and fights for her rights today becomes a target for the Iranian regime.” Journalist Newroz cited in her interview what the Iranian “moral police” committed against the two young women, Gina Amini (22 years old) and Armita Krawand (16 years old).

Newroz Demhat confirmed that those who violate morals are the Iranian “moral police.” She said: “In addition to suppressing and arresting women, the Iranian state is trying to exclude them from all aspects of life. It is a state based on religious fanaticism and follows the policy of one man who facilitates his work without women.”

Journalist Newroz pointed out that the Turkish state shares the same mentality with the Iranian state in dealing with male and female journalists, and said: “Only the names, presidents, and geography are different, but the regime and mentality are the same. The Turkish state arrests dozens of Kurdish journalists, both male and female, in its prisons, and several days ago launched an arrest campaign that included a number of Kurdish journalists.” "From journalists, all this in order to hide the truth."

In order to reduce the oppression practiced against female journalists, journalist Newroz Damhat stressed that all women, not just female journalists, must follow the system of democratic confederation to reach a free society, and escalate their struggle by directing the lens of their cameras and use their pens to stand up to authoritarian regimes and liberate women from the oppression practiced against them.
