Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said today before a European Union-led donor conference that the international community has abandoned Syrian refugees as funding to support them in host countries dwindles.

Diplomats said that European and Arab ministers along with major international organizations will meet at the eighth conference on Syria, but other than vague promises and financial pledges, there is little sign that Europe can take the initiative, according to Reuters.

Al-Safadi told reporters upon his arrival in Brussels, "We will send a very clear message from Jordan as a host country that we feel that the refugees and the host countries have been abandoned."

However, he indicated that his country would continue to do everything in its power, adding, "But unless we are helped, and unless the international community assumes its responsibility, there will be a decline in services and there will be more suffering for refugees."

Jordan hosts about 1.3 million Syrians. Al-Safadi said that the issue “cannot be resolved unless they return to their country. Therefore, we need to focus more on creating the appropriate conditions for their voluntary return.”
