The Eastern Military Region thwarted an attempt to infiltrate and smuggle large quantities of narcotics from Syria into Jordanian territory on Tuesday, according to Jordan's Petra News Agency.

A responsible military source in the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces - the Arab Army said that the Border Guard Forces in the Eastern Military Region, in coordination with the military security services and the Anti-Narcotics Department, were able to thwart an attempt to infiltrate and smuggle large quantities of narcotics.

The source stated that the movements of a group of smugglers attempting to cross the border illegally were monitored. Rapid reaction patrols were deployed and rules of engagement were implemented, leading to their retreat into Syrian territory. He noted that, with the intensification of search and inspection operations, large quantities of narcotic substances were seized and transferred to the relevant authorities.

Recently, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime warned of the continued production and export of Captagon in Syria, stressing that the country remains a major hub for the trade of this substance, despite the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. The annual UN report also indicated that the reality of this trade remains uncertain, amid indications of its regional expansion and the emergence of new laboratories in neighboring countries.
