A military field source in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor said that the attack targeting SDF checkpoint in the town of Abu Hamam at dawn today was carried out by an ISIS cell that infiltrated from the western bank of the Euphrates River.

The source revealed that the cell infiltrated from the Subaykhan area and the al-Badya between Al-Mayadin and Al-Bukamal, exploiting the state of chaos and insecurity in those areas to reorganize its ranks before sneaking into areas controlled by the Deir ez-Zor Military Council to carry out surprise attacks against SDF forces.

He noted that SDF fighters immediately responded to the attack and pursued the attackers to the area from which they came.

The source pointed out that this attack is not the first of its kind, as attempts by the organization to infiltrate from government-held areas to carry out similar operations are recurring.

The SDF Media Center had previously announced in a statement that the attack had been repelled with no casualties among its forces, and that a sweep operation had been conducted to reinforce security and stability in the area, reaffirming its commitment to confronting any threat targeting civilians.

Earlier today, ANHA agency published a detailed report on attacks that targeted the North and East Syria region during last October, in which 18 ISIS cell movements were recorded during the month, including attacks using landmines, light machine guns, and medium-caliber shells. These operations resulted in the martyrdom of five SDF fighters and the injury of ten others, in addition to four Internal Security Forces members being injured, two civilians being martyred and two others injured, along with property damage.

The report indicates that most of those attacks and incidents occurred in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor Canton, particularly its eastern countryside, which was liberated from ISIS by the SDF in 2019.
