Iran commutes Sharifa Mohammadi’s death sentence to 30 years

The Iranian judiciary announced the reduction of Mohammadi’s death sentence to 30 years in prison, with the approval of the head of the judiciary, in a move seen as a response to legal and international efforts aimed at clearing her of the “rebellion” charge, according to Roj News Agency.

In July 2024, Iranian authorities had sentenced Sharifa Mohammadi to death on charges of participating in activities described as “rebellion against the state,” a ruling that drew widespread criticism from human rights organizations, which considered it an attack on her peaceful activism in defending workers’ rights.

Mohammadi’s lawyer confirmed on Wednesday, October 29, that the death sentence had been commuted to first-degree imprisonment for 30 years, noting that the immediate risk of execution had been removed, though legal efforts continue to seek full annulment of the sentence.

He explained that current efforts focus on clearing his client of the charges, either through retrial or by applying Article 477 of Iranian law, describing the development as “an important step toward justice,” while noting it does not mark the end of the judicial process.

Mohammadi is one of Iran’s prominent labor rights activists, known for her demands for social justice and efforts to protect workers’ rights. Her case has garnered widespread solidarity both domestically and internationally, given the peaceful nature of her activism and its support for Iranian workers.
