Entities linked to Turkish intelligence, operating under the cover of the Turkish Consulate in Aleppo, are recruiting academics and university professors through financial grants to promote Turkish ideas and spread the Turkish language and culture. This has contributed to the closure of the Persian Literature Department and the opening of a Turkish Literature Department at the Faculty of Arts at Aleppo University.

The Secretary-General of the Syrian Homeland Party affirmed that democracy and decentralization form the foundation of a new Syria after decades of centralized rule and one-party dominance. The co-chair of the Lawyers’ Union in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, Bashira Jamal al-Din, warned that the future of Syrian women is now at risk under the transitional government and its continued policy of excluding women and marginalizing their role. In 2025, Syria witnessed government efforts to consolidate control following the fall of the Baath regime. These efforts were accompanied by political marginalization and social repercussions manifested in rising violence and extremism, along with divergent international positions.

Since the outbreak of the popular uprising in 2011, Syria has turned into an open arena for regional and international interventions. With the political solution stalled, the land—burdened by conflict—has become crowded with conflicting agendas. In this context, Turkey-backed factions emerged as tools of influence on the Syrian scene, presenting themselves as opposition forces to the defunct Baath regime, but becoming beholden to Turkey’s will and committing heinous crimes against the residents of areas occupied by Turkey.
