Harsh weather exacerbates plight of IDPs from Afrin, Shehba

The humanitarian situation for 6,120 displaced persons from Afrin and Shahba residing in temporary shelters in Tabqa, within the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), has deteriorated due to severe weather conditions.

For the past three days, a severe weather front has battered the Tabqa Canton, exacerbating the already dire living conditions of the displaced. By this afternoon, 210 tents in the temporary shelter at the city's sports complex had been completely destroyed. Displaced families have resorted to using household tools and cleaning equipment to drain water from their tents.

In response, the Tabqa People's Municipality dispatched a water-extraction vehicle to aid in the relief efforts. However, the combination of heavy rains, strong winds, and the instability of tents set up on soft soil has made it nearly impossible to restore the damaged shelters.

Tabqa currently hosts approximately 12,720 displaced persons, with 6,120 living in tents across two main sites: the sports complex shelter and a smaller camp. These camps contain 1,224 tents, each housing a single family. The remaining displaced individuals have taken refuge in schools and residential areas across the canton.
