Germany to resume deportation of Syrian refugees after 13 years

A German official announced that the country intends to resume the deportation of Syrian refugees whose asylum applications have been rejected, emphasizing the need to distinguish between those who have integrated into society and those who rely on social welfare and do not have the right to stay.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that Germany aims to reach an agreement with the transitional government in Syria this year regarding the deportation of rejected Syrian asylum seekers, marking the first such initiative since 2012.

In remarks to the Rheinische Post newspaper, the minister clarified that "deportations will start with criminals first," followed by those without residence rights, stressing the importance of differentiating between individuals who have successfully integrated into society and the labor market and those dependent on social benefits.

The minister added that discussions on this matter will begin soon, noting that he has instructed the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees to partially resume pending asylum procedures for Syrians in preparation for deportations.

It is noteworthy that Germany has not carried out any deportations of Syrians from its territory since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in 2012.
