Equality promoted ahead of Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women

As the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25 approaches, the Women’s Council of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) held a general meeting today at the party’s hall in the city of al-Hol, in the Jazira Canton. The meeting was attended by members of Autonomous Administration institutions, as well as several activists and individuals interested in social and human rights issues, with the aim of raising awareness on ways to combat violence against women.

The meeting began with a moment of silence, followed by a lecture delivered by Sajida Hassan, a member of the party’s Women’s Council in the city. She discussed the challenges and violations women have faced throughout history, stressing that the struggle for freedom and equality is the foundation of women’s empowerment in society.

For her part, Sharvin Hasaka, an administrator in al-Hol, spoke about the concept of opposition and the various forms of violence against women, noting that the inherited patriarchal mentality has been a major cause of marginalizing women’s roles in public life, even though all religions and sects have affirmed women’s dignity and their right to active participation.

The meeting also featured interventions from attendees, who focused on the need to change customs and traditions that perpetuate discrimination, pointing out that both the capitalist system and social heritage have contributed to the continuation of violence against women.

The meeting concluded with calls to intensify community and educational efforts to promote a culture of equality and mutual respect between the sexes, affirming that combating violence against women is a collective responsibility that begins within the family and extends to all sectors of society.

This meeting comes as part of the sixth phase of the campaign against violence toward women, launched by the PYD Women’s Council on October 8.
