Emphasis on strengthening Kurdish unity during commemoration of Qereçoxê martyrs

Today, April 25, marks Martyrs’ Day and the ninth anniversary of the airstrike carried out by Turkish occupation aircraft on Mount Qereçoxê, which resulted in the martyrdom of 20 fighters from the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), in addition to war correspondents at the media center, and the injury of 18 other fighters.

Hundreds of residents and families of the martyrs from the Jazira region, along with YPG and YPJ fighters, headed to Mount Qereçoxê to take part in the commemoration ceremony.

The ceremony began with a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs, followed by a speech by Mohammed Saeed, a member of the Martyrs’ Families Council, who said: “This presence reflects commitment to the values of the martyrs and continuing along their path. Preserving these values is a source of strength in facing challenges.”

He added: “Mount Qereçoxê has proven its resilience in the face of attacks, and the Turkish occupation state has, at various stages, attempted to destabilize the region and erase Kurdish identity.”

He noted that an airstrike targeted the mountain following the defeat of ISIS, and that attacks continue to this day.

For her part, Hadiya Yusuf, co-chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), stated that the attacks on Mount Qereçoxê targeted the Kurdish people’s struggle.

She pointed to the role the mountain played during the Rojava Revolution, emphasizing that the current phase requires strengthening unity and working to secure rights within a political and constitutional framework.

She added that the Kurdish people in Rojava, who have faced policies of extermination and denial, are going through a decisive stage, and that their resilience stems from the sacrifices of the martyrs.

She also stressed the importance of maintaining stability and continuing efforts within the path of integration, alongside pressing the issue of detainees and the remains of martyrs.

She reaffirmed the necessity of strengthening unity within society at this stage and intensifying efforts to guarantee fundamental rights in Syria.

The commemoration concluded with chants honoring the martyrs, as participants reaffirmed their commitment to continuing along their path.
