Brake: Lebanon must accelerate efforts to contain Hezbollah’s weapons

The U.S. envoy to Syria, Tom Brake, urged Lebanon to accelerate progress on containing Hezbollah’s weapons, noting that the Lebanese army is facing shortages in both financial and human resources.

The U.S. envoy to Syria, Tom Brake, called on Lebanon today to speed up efforts to contain Hezbollah’s arsenal, noting that the Lebanese army suffers from shortages of financial and human resources.

Speaking at the Manama Dialogue Forum, Brake described Lebanon as experiencing a state of a “failed state,” while acknowledging the resilience of the Lebanese leadership.

He urged the Lebanese authorities to act more swiftly on the issue of Hezbollah’s weapons and called on Lebanese citizens to engage in negotiations and safeguard their borders.

Brake added that Israel is ready to reach an agreement with Lebanon on the borders, but warned that it may respond militarily within Lebanon depending on developments.

Israel has periodically threatened new military operations inside Lebanese territory to push Hezbollah away from the southern Litani River, in case the Lebanese state fails to meet the condition of containing the group’s weapons.
