Australian delegation visits Women of Zenobia Assembly; DDA, NE, Syria

David Shoebridge, a member of the Australian Senate, along with his accompanying delegation, toured the Women of Zenobia Assembly and the Democratic Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria in Raqqa. The visit aimed to gain insight into the political, social, and humanitarian realities of the region.

The delegation was received by Khod al-Issa, spokesperson for the Women of Zenobia Assembly, and Bushra Mohammed, the assembly’s general coordinator. Representatives of the Autonomous Administration’s co-presidency of the Executive Council for Northeast Syria, Aven Sweid and Hussein Osman, along with several deputies, also welcomed the delegation.

During the meeting, the assembly members highlighted key activities across Raqqa, Tabqa, and Deir ez-Zor regions, showcasing the role of women in organizational and training committees, as well as political empowerment programs. Special attention was given to initiatives aimed at analyzing the political landscape and enhancing women’s participation in political parties and institutions.

The discussion also addressed the challenges faced by women, including violence and online harassment via social media platforms, and how these issues impact women’s public engagement.

Assembly members underscored the importance of women’s continued political activism following the liberation of the region from ISIS mercenaries, stressing the need to raise community awareness to establish women as effective partners in institutions, particularly in the political arena.

The dialogue also reflected on the legacy of the late Hevrin Khalaf, praising her struggle and recognizing her as a symbol of free women in Northeast Syria. The assembly condemned the appointment of her killer within the Syrian Interim Government and called on humanitarian organizations to reconsider this decision.

The Australian delegation expressed its support for women in Northeast Syria, affirming its commitment to urge the Australian government to recognize the Autonomous Administration project and to strengthen cooperation on human rights and women’s empowerment.

The visit concluded with a tour of the Women of Zenobia Assembly’s facilities in Raqqa, where the delegation viewed commemorative photos of martyrs, honoring their memory and sacrifices.

The delegation later held a closed meeting with the Autonomous Administration officials, away from media coverage.
