Al-Sharaa arrives in Anqara, meets Trump on NATO sidelines

On Wednesday, the Syrian Interim Government head arrived in Ankara, Turkey's capital, where he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO summit.

Syrian Interim Government leader Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in the Turkish capital, Ankara, on Wednesday, where he is scheduled to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the NATO Summit.

The summit concludes on Wednesday with the participation of 36 heads of state and government, along with a number of representatives from the Gulf states. Al-Sharaa is attending at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday alongside Erdogan, Trump said that the United States has a "very good relationship" with Syria's new leader, adding that this was "thanks to President Erdogan."

The meeting marks a continuation of contacts between the two sides after Trump and al-Sharaa first met in Saudi Arabia during the U.S. president's visit to the Gulf states in May 2025. Al-Sharaa later visited the White House in November of the same year.
