AANES representative meets with Leftist Parties in European Parliament

The representative of the Democratic Autonomous Administration for the North and East Syria region met with the Leftist Parties Bloc in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

On Tuesday, December 16, 2024, the representative of the Democratic Autonomous Administration in Europe, Abdul Karim Omar, delivered a speech at the meeting of the Leftist Parties in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

In his speech, Abdul Karim Omar discussed the situation in Syria after the fall of the authoritarian Baathist regime, which oppressed and committed crimes against all Syrians for decades, particularly the Kurdish people. He highlighted the exceptional measures imposed on Kurds, including the imprisonment of thousands of the best Kurdish youth, the deprivation of citizenship for hundreds of thousands, systematic killings, the Arabization of city and village names, demographic changes, and other injustices.

Omar stressed the need for the international community, especially the European Union, to closely monitor the situation in Syria to achieve national and democratic change in the future. He emphasized the importance of involving all components of the Syrian population, particularly the Kurdish people and the communities of North and East Syria, in the political process to build a new, decentralized democratic Syria as a shared homeland for all Syrians.

Omar elaborated on the attacks by Turkish-backed mercenaries, referred to as the "National Army," on Tal Rifaat and Shahba, which resulted in crimes against defenseless civilians and caused a new wave of forced displacement from Afrin to safer areas in North and East Syria. He stated, “They are now exposed to the harsh winter cold.”

Omar continued, explaining that the Turkish occupation and its mercenaries’ attack on Manbij led to further killings, massacres, and crimes, as well as another wave of displacement. He noted that, “Turkey is now preparing to attack Kobani, the city that became a symbol of freedom and resistance against ISIS terrorism.”

Abdul Karim Omar urged the parliamentarians to assume their responsibilities as Turkey attempts once again to exterminate the Kurdish people and dismantle the Autonomous Administration in North and East Syria. He called on the European Union to work on the following:

1. Pressuring Turkey to halt its attacks on North and East Syria, which, if continued, could lead to the escape of thousands of ISIS members from detention centers and tens of thousands of their families from camps. This would have catastrophic consequences for the region and the international community, as well as trigger new waves of migration to Europe.

2. Issuing a resolution to stop hostilities across Syria to initiate a political dialogue among the various components of the Syrian people.

3. Ensuring Kurdish participation and the inclusion of the Democratic Autonomous Administration in the political process, while guaranteeing the rights of the Kurdish people and other components in the future Syrian constitution.

4. Providing humanitarian aid and relief to the displaced from Shahba, Tal Rifaat, and Manbij as quickly as possible, given the Autonomous Administration's inability to shoulder the burden alone.
