4 million refugees in Sudan

The number of Sudanese refugees has exceeded four million, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), amid the ongoing armed conflict in the country since April 2023. The continued escalation in displacement reflects the depth of the humanitarian crisis, which the British Foreign Secretary described as "the worst in the world."

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the number of Sudanese fleeing the conflict in their country has risen to more than four million refugees.

This came during a press conference held by UNHCR spokesperson Eugene Byon in Geneva today, where she revealed that the number of Sudanese refugees had exceeded the four million mark by the end of last Monday.

In this context, British Foreign Secretary David Lamy warned that Sudan is experiencing "the worst humanitarian disaster in the world," while participating in a conference on governance and development in Africa held in Morocco on Monday.

These statements come at a time when the region is witnessing a growing influx of refugees into neighboring countries such as Chad, South Sudan, and Egypt, which are already suffering from economic crises and limited resources.

This large number reflects part of the worsening humanitarian tragedy in Sudan, which also includes approximately nine million citizens displaced within the country's borders to escape violence. These statistics come after the outbreak of armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, which has turned into one of the worst humanitarian crises in the region.
