Enhancing women's solidarity is the most important tasks of the Women's Council in PYD

On September 20, 2003, two decades have passed since the founding of the Democratic Union Party, and on this occasion, the spokeswoman for the party’s Women’s Council spoke to ANHA's agency about the Council’s work.

Council tasks

Council spokeswoman Zahra Samo indicated that the Women’s Council, established in 2018, organizes its work within the party that was the first to implement the co-presidency system at the party’s fifth conference, as it is the first party to follow the approach of leader Abdullah Ocalan in Rojava and Syria.

The council, which consists of 22 members and administrators, is responsible for spreading and deepening women’s awareness, introducing them to their rights, duties and issues, combating all forms of violence against women, including the male mentality, organizing women to exercise their pioneering role in democratic politics in accordance with the philosophy of the democratic nation, and struggling to build a democratic family and society, moral political.

It also works to establish social justice, achieve gender equality, consolidate the co-presidency system, and follow up on the development of women’s organizational, ideological, political and social work inside and outside Syria.

Combating violence and political repression

The struggle against violence against women, especially in the Syrian regions occupied by Turkey and its mercenaries, and communicating their voice to international powers is one of the most prominent goals of the Council, as Zahra Samu noted that the Council is still continuing its struggle in light of the conditions of war and attacks on the four parts of Kurdistan, especially Rojava and Syria.

The Women's Council conducts its work through its four committees (the Organizing Committee, Diplomacy, Finance and Economics, and the Media and Archives Committee) and the Young Women's Council.

Struggle according to the legacy of female martyrs

Zahra confirmed that their continuation of work is based on the legacy of the male and female martyrs of the party known as the Martyrs’ Party, recalling the martyr Zainab Muhammad who has great role in establishing the Women’s Council, who had a prominent role in empowering women politically.

She added that the Women's Council struggles according to the legacy of the male and female martyrs, such as the martyrs Zainab Muhammad and Shaylan Kobani (Maysa Baqi), and thousands of other women who struggled and sacrificed their lives, stressing, "We will continue our struggle to achieve the goals of our martyrs to ensure freedom for all Syrian women."

Awareness and intellectual projects implemented this year

Referring to what the Women’s Council achieved during the year 2023, the Council’s spokeswoman said: “The physical freedom of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is one of the main topics we are working on. We also sought to activate the role of women in the Arab tribes by holding meetings, forums and lectures for them.”

In its activities and work this year, he also focused on educating the young group about the scourge of drug abuse and the special war being waged against it. Zahra Samo explained in this regard: “We launched campaigns to raise awareness of the enemy’s policies aimed at spreading drugs in our regions and targeting the young group directly.”

Every six months, the Council launches a campaign to combat violence against women, under various titles, in which brochures are distributed, lectures are given, and seminars and awareness meetings are held with the people of the region.

Syrian women join hands

As for diplomacy, the Women’s Council held several meetings with well-known figures and external parties to introduce the women’s struggle and revolution in Rojava and North ans East Syria and its goals, and to strengthen women’s solidarity to find a solution to the Syrian crisis.

Spokesperson for the Women’s Council of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Zahra Samo, affirmed at the conclusion of her speech, “We, Syrian women, must unite our goals, dialogues, and visions for the freedom of Syria, by joining hands and writing a new constitution for Syria that guarantees women’s rights and preserves their freedom.”
