Iran has executed more than 697 people since September 2022, a 36 percent increase compared to 2021, the Iranian Human Rights Organization reported.

In the report carried by the Iran International website, which included protests and Iran’s “unprecedented” use of the death penalty with the aim of inciting fear, the organization stated that since September 2022 and the beginning of the uprising, 7 demonstrators have been hanged, and 10 other demonstrators are still awaiting the execution of the death sentence.

The same sentence was issued to 82 people due to the charges against them.

The most prominent events come since the killing of the young Kurdish woman, Gina Amini, on September 16, 2022.

The killing of Gina, who became a symbol of the struggle for all women, sparked protests in Rojhelat (Eastern Kurdistan).

On September 13, 2022, Gina Amini was arrested by the Iranian authorities, while traveling to Tehran with her family, under the pretext of not adhering to the hijab. During her arrest, she was subjected to torture, which led to her death on the 16th of the same month.

Following her murder, a popular uprising broke out throughout the regions of Kurdistan and Iran, led by women and the slogan “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” (Women, Life, Freedom), and the Iranian state authorities faced it with repression.

Amnesty International published a statement in which it pointed to the arrest of tens of thousands of demonstrators, the arbitrary arrest of the families of the dead, and the intensification of pressure on students with the aim of keeping them from participating in the protests, and warned that dozens of demonstrators are at risk of arrest.

The Iranian Human Rights Organization called on the international community to take action against the widespread use of the death penalty by Iranian state authorities.
