Fuel crisis, rise in prices in Damascus govt-held areas

The capital, Damascus, is witnessing the beginning of a new fuel crisis and an exacerbation of the public transportation crisis, as bus and car drivers stop for hours in front of gas stations, hoping to get fuel.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the allocations for public cars are not enough, which forces drivers to buy fuel at the free, unsubsidized price, and thus the transportation fare increases, so that the citizen is the biggest loser.

Fuel is available on the black market at double prices.

During the recent fuel crisis, the price of a liter of petrol reached 20 thousand, while the price of a liter of diesel fuel reached 14 thousand Syrian pounds.

And with the rise in fuel prices, the prices of all commodities and basic materials in the areas of the Damascus government are witnessing a significant increase, especially food supplies, vegetables, fruits, medicines and fuel, in addition to internet services, electricity and transportation, amid devaluation Syrian pound against the US dollar.

Furthermore, there is no new change in the salaries of employees and the wages of workers, as the salary of Damascus government employees hardly exceeds 150,000 Syrian pounds, and it is not enough to meet the needs of thefamily for only two days.

It is noteworthy that a report issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP), stated in June 2022 that Syria is considered one of the 20 hotspots of hunger in the world.
