Specifically on March 12, 2004, Damascus government tried to exploit a sporting event to create a conflict between the Kurds and Arabs in the March 12 Martyrs Stadium (or Qamishlo Stadium) in Qamishlo, under pretexts of quarrels between fans of Al- Jihad team in Qamishlo and Al- Fatwa's in Deir al-Zor.

Attempts to tear Syrian society apart

Hikmat Habib the co-chair of Legislative Council for the Autonomous Administration in Jazira region and eyewitness during the events of the March 12 indicated to Damascus government’s goals in exploiting the sporting event between the Jihad and Al-Fatwa clubs, and said: “The Syrian regime has methods A malicious reliance on its policies, at that time it sought to tear Syrian society and hit the components together by exploiting the sports match.”

During a football match between the Al-Jihad Club team in Qamishlo and the Al-Fatwa team coming from Deir Ezzor on March 12, 2004, Damascus government committed a major massacre inside the stadium, by closing the stadium door during the match and firing live bullets at the Al-Jihad team fans, as a result 9 civilians, including two children, were killed.

Damascus government forces were not satisfied with this brutal crime only, but also prevented ambulances from reaching the wounded, which led to martyr many of them, in addition to refusal of government hospitals to receive them.

Kurds are rising up against Damascus government policies

Events of the 12 March stadium were followed by large-scale uprisings in all the cities of Rojava, Aleppo and Damascus.

Habib explained that Damascus government forces used excessive force against the demonstrations that went out to condemn the massacre against the citizens.

On the second day, Damascus government brought army and security forces from Raqqa and Deir al-Zor to the streets, and prevented the people from attending the funerals of the 9 martyrs who were martyred in the stadium,

It Indiscriminately used live bullets which led to martyr a number of residents, which angered the Kurds. The Uprisings spread to Sere-Kaniye, Amuda, Dêrik, Girkê Legê Hasaka, Kobani, Afrin, Aleppo, and to the capital, Damascus.

On the 13th of March, that is, on the second day of the uprising, 24 people, including women and children, were martyred, and hundreds were wounded, furthermore Damascus govt arrested more

than 2,700 citizens, some of whom died under torture.

Habib drew attention to policies of exclusion by Damascus government against peoples of the region, especially the Kurds, by saying :

"The Syrian regime did not give the Syrian identity or any documents to many Kurdish families, they were not accepted in universities and social and civic institutions.

Democratic Nation Project thwarted plans of sedition

Despite all Damascus attempts to create strife and between the components, the Democratic Nation Project put forward by the leader Ocalan, united all the components which led to formation of the Autonomous Administration in 2014 and in 2018 it announced establishment (Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria).

Habib said that " The regime tried to incite the clans and people of the region against the Autonomous Administration project by claiming that the Autonomous Administration is a Kurdish separatist project in an effort to recreate the 2004 scenario

He added: " the people of the region turned around their democratic project and fought all forms of terrorism together, they managed to liberate the region, starting from Tel Kocher to Raqqa and Deir al-Zor.

Habib, confirmed that Damascus government continues its policies in sowing discord among the components of the region, through various methods and schemes, including the so-called "settlements"

Finally, Hikmat Habib stressed to the components of NE Syria to be aware of the private war by Damascus government, stressing on development of the democratic nation project to be a model for all of Syria.
