 KOBANI – MAYSA AKKARI

The drums of war beat on the 15th of September 2014, when ISIS began massing its forces on the outskirts of Kobani canton for a major attack on the canton, starting from its countryside all the way to the city.

The military and numerical superiority of ISIS did not affect the resolve of the People’s Protection Units and Women at the start of the military offensive. The units did not surrender, but resisted valiantly until they offered many martyrs. Many of them carried out guerrilla operations such as “Rivana, Arin Mirkan, Baran Sarhad, Irish and Zozan” trying to deter  enemy forces and prevent them from advancing.

The 26th of December 2014, the date of the liberation of the city of Kobani, cannot in any way be considered a passing moment, because that date constituted a decisive turning point on the path of drawing new features for the Syrian situation.

After the announcement of the liberation of Kobani, the military operations did not stop until they reached the villages of the district, and while the operations continued, village after village and town after town were liberated on the three fronts of fighting (south, eastern and western).

A few months later, the People's Protection Units managed to liberate all the villages of Kobani, standing on the outskirts of the centers from which ISIS launched the military attacks on the city of Kobani.

From Kobani to Baghouz..sunrise after dark night

The campaigns to liberate the areas occupied by ISIS continued, as after the liberation of the Kobani canton, the Kurdish Units were able to liberate the neighboring areas, starting from Sarrin district to Al-Baghouz, after the establishment of the Syrian Democratic Forces in 2015 following the victory of the Kobani resistance.

The People’s and Women’s Protection Units managed to liberate the Girê Spî / Tal Abyad canton, located 60 km east of Kobani city on June 15, 2015, and then liberate the Ain Issa district, which is 70 km from Kobani from the southern side, on the 22nd  June 2015.

The Syrian Democratic Forces were later able to liberate Tishreen Dam on December 26, 2015, and then on August 12, 2016, after 73 days of continuous battles, the forces managed to liberate the city of Manbij.

On October 17, 2017, the Syrian Democratic Forces, the People's Protection Units and the Women managed to liberate the city of Raqqa, and thus the battles continued until the forces managed to defeat ISIS in its last strongholds in Al-Baghouz on March 23, 2019.

It is no secret to anyone that ISIS mercenaries imposed harsh and severe provisions on all the areas they occupied, so the levels of suffering in those areas had reached their peak, and getting rid of ISIS, that force that everyone believed would not be defeated, was a dream for every person who lived under the occupation of the mercenaries.  .

The liberation of Kobani positively affected the people of the region with all its components, especially the Arab component, who suffered from the oppression and oppression of ISIS, so the liberation operations for them were like sunrise after a dark night.  With the liberation of the region and its people from ISIS, the people of the region were able to live in peace and get rid of the fear and panic they were experiencing under ISIS occupation of the area.

"During the liberation of Kobani, the aspirations of the people of the region returned"

In this context, the co-chair of the Legislative Council in the Euphrates region, Muhammad Hamdan, said that all components of northern and eastern Syria received the Syrian Democratic Forces during their liberation campaigns and adopted the democratic thought they carry, and participated in the liberation of all areas occupied by ISIS terrorism at the time.

Muhammad Hamdan indicated that during those liberation campaigns, the aspirations and future of the Arab people returned to them to live in peace and security in their areas.

He added, "After the liberation of the regions of north and east Syria, councils, communes, and local administrations were formed, and the people of the region participated in them by themselves in managing their regions safely, and the Arab society was well organized and served itself, and now it is reaping the fruits of that great achievement."

Hamdan confirmed that the city of Kobani was the one that broke the thorn of the global terrorism of ISIS with the efforts of its young men and daughters, and it was the rock on which ISIS was defeated, and from Kobani, campaigns to liberate all regions were launched and all its components were liberated.

Muhammad Hamdan concluded his speech by saying, "Under the Autonomous Administration in north and east Syria, the civil, military, political and service organization are all from the people of the region themselves, and women in particular were able to regain all their rights stolen from them after liberating the region from ISIS terrorism."

After 5 years of fighting ISIS, the Syrian Democratic Forces, the People's Protection Units and the Women were able to eliminate it geographically, but ISIS still threatens the region through its sleeper cells that are actively active in the region.
