Amina Omar: Turkey's control over water resources puts the region at risk of food and water insecurity

The confirmation of the co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, Amina Omar, came during her participation in the International Water Forum in North and East Syria, which is now being held in the city of Hasakah, north and east of Syria, under the auspices of the "Local Administration and Environment Body, Rojava University, and the Euphrates Center for Studies."

Amina Omar said, "Syria is one of the countries in the Middle East that suffers from a scarcity of water resources, and has been in a continuous conflict for decades, and this conflict has caused the destruction of infrastructure and water, as a result of the bombing and targeting of water resources, power plants and sewage facilities."

She added: "There is a permanent Syrian conflict with the Turkish state on the issue of the Euphrates River water, despite the protocol signed between the two sides in 1987, but Turkey did not abide by it, and began to act of the Euphrates' water as one of its rights, and build projects and dams without any regard for Syria. "

Amina Omar pointed out that this behavior led to a decrease in the level of the Euphrates River to its lowest levels at the present time, and said: "This portends a humanitarian catastrophe, as it has caused the cutting of drinking water and power cuts for millions of residents of NE, Syria."

She added, "Turkey is a major party in the conflict in Syria, and it is taking advantage of the difficult conditions experienced by the Syrian people, and it is using water as a weapon of war in order to achieve political, economic and security goals."

She stressed that Turkey's continuation, as an occupying state, in its hostile policies towards the Syrian people, resulting from its expansionist ambitions and control over its water resources, puts the region in the face of the threat of food and water insecurity, and poses a challenge to achieving political stability and achieving sustainable development.

The co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council, Amina Omar, called upon the international community to exert more efforts to end the Syrian crisis and find a comprehensive political settlement that guarantees the legitimate rights of all components of the Syrian people.
