The American newspaper "New York Times" quoted the official, who requested anonymity, as saying: "The Israelis informed the United States that their forces had struck the ship early Tuesday morning."

He added that the Israelis described the attack as retaliation for previous Iranian strikes on Israeli ships, and the ship was badly damaged.

He also added that the Israelis are expected to have delayed the attack on the Iranian ship in order to give time for the US aircraft carrier Dwight Eisenhower to move away from the area, noting that Eisenhower was about 200 miles away when the ship was hit at sea.

Earlier, US officials denied Washington was responsible for the attack on the Iranian ship in the Red Sea.

Since the end of 2019, Tel Aviv has been using weapons, especially sea mines (explosive devices), to strike Iranian ships or those carrying Iranian goods sailing to Syria via the Red Sea and elsewhere.
