Caretaker of Sununi district: Yazidis' will must be accepted and heeded to manage their affairs

On October 9, the federal government in Iraq and Southern Kurdistan Region Government reached an agreement that came after a series of meetings among officials from the two governments regarding the administrative and security situation in Şengal province.

This agreement was concluded without referring to the opinion and demands of the province's people, especially after the "Farman" massacre that the Yazidis were subjected to in 2014 after ISIS mercenaries' attack that left thousands of victims and abducted women, as the fate of hundreds of them is still anonymous.

In this context, the agreement, from its signature representatives of Şengal district were removed, was categorically rejected by the political and popular actors who considered it a crime against them.

The Chargé d'Affairs of the Sununi district in Şengal Khudida Juki says: This agreement is not in the interest of the Yazidi community, and there will be no positive results for it in stabilizing the security situation in Şengal.

He pointed out that at a time when Şengal was subjected to attacks by the forces that signed the agreement, the people of Şengal were left alone in August 2014, and they were the ones who defended their land and formed their forces "Şengal Resistance Units," and now they want to disband this force and we do not accept this.

He stressed that the terms of the agreement will not be implemented, and the Yazidis will not accept that things return to Şengal as they were before the Farman.

He also said: "If they want to serve the people of Şengal, they must heed the will of the Yazidis who have experienced pain, take their demands seriously, and have a role in consolidating more stability in the region."

  A delegation representing the Autonomous Administration Council in Şengal and a number of dignitaries and notables arrived in Baghdad yesterday to meet with Iraqi officials and convey a message to Şengal people, regarding the agreement and discuss it.
