European Union confirms its intention to impose sanctions on Turkey

Borrell called on Ankara to refrain from taking unilateral measures in the eastern Mediterranean crisis, at a time Greece and Cyprus are calling for sanctions to be imposed on Turkey due to the illegal exploration of energy resources in the eastern Mediterranean.

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Politics and Security stressed the “escalating European frustration with Turkish behavior in the Eastern Mediterranean,” due to the illegal exploration of oil and ggas.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas joined Lee Borrell in calling on European countries to consider imposing more firm measures on Turkey, during the European Union summit next month.

The German Foreign Minister said that his country's relations with Turkey have been severely affected by the eastern Mediterranean crisis, which continues to escalate with the passage of days, and Ankara's failure to comply with international calls for calm.

 On Friday, Maas stressed the need to sit at the dialogue table in order to solve the crisis, saying that "constructive dialogue is the only way out of it.
