Joint military exercises for the air forces between Greece, UAE next week

Media outlets reported that the UAE intends to send F-16 fighters to Greece to participate in military training with the Greek Air Force.

It is decided that the UAE and Greece will conduct joint air military exercises next week by sending the UAE F-16 fighters to Greece, according to a Greek military source.

The source told AFP that the Emirati planes would be sent to a base on the island of Crete.

He stressed that this training falls within the framework of cooperation between the ministries of defense and foreign affairs in the two countries. The source did not give further details, and the two countries were closely coordinating on the economic level.

On Friday, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias announced in a tweet that he had spoken by phone to his Emirati counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan about bilateral cooperation, regional issues and the situation in the eastern Mediterranean.

Tensions in the eastern Mediterranean region have escalated again in recent weeks after a campaign to explore for gas fields that Turkey is conducting in maritime areas it disputes with Greece.
