​​​​​​​Iranian parliament chooses Qalibaf as successor to Ali-Larijani

Qalibaf won the majority of votes, gaining 230 votes out of 264 who attended the meeting out of 290.

Fereydoun Abbasi, head of the Atomic Energy Commission in the government of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, won 17 votes, while 12 deputies voted for Mustafa Mirsalim, Minister of Culture in the government of former President Hashemi Rafsanjani, and the number of invalid votes reached eight.

The conservative politician, Qalibaf, is considered one of the fiercest critics of the performance of the government of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, especially in economic files.

Amir Hussain Qazi Zadeh Hashemi was also elected with 208 votes, and Ali Nikzad with 196 votes as the first and second deputies of the Speaker of Parliament.

Qalibaf, a former officer in the Revolutionary Guards, held several positions previously. He was the mayor of Tehran between 2005 and 2017, and he was the commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Reconstruction headquarters for the period 1994-1997, and he commanded the Air Force in the Revolutionary Guards from 1997 to 2000, and he was head of the Iranian police in the period from 2000 to 2005.
