UN official warns of continued flow of arms and mercenaries to Libya

The United Nations expressed "grave concern" over the continued flow of weapons, equipment and mercenaries to Libya, calling on countries involved to respect the UN embargo on the sending of weapons to the war-torn country.

"We are following with great concern recent reports on the massive flow of arms, equipment and mercenaries in support of the parties to the Libyan conflict," said Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for the international organization, during his press conference.

Dujarric warned that any dispatch of weapons, materiel or mercenaries to Libya "constitutes a flagrant violation of the arms embargo" imposed on this country since 2011.

"We call on all members of the international community to respect the arms embargo imposed by the United Nations and to support its full implementation."

He acknowledged that the information received regarding violations of this ban "has registered a significant increase in the past few weeks, as almost daily transfers (of arms) by air, land and sea have been reported."

Dujarric warned that "this increase in violations of the arms embargo will lead to an intensification of fighting, which will lead to severe consequences for the Libyan people."
