Quarantine imposed on a camp in Greece, after immigrants confirmed infected with Covid 19

The virus specialists conducted tests on 63 migrants after the discovery of a 19-year-old migrant infection who entered a hospital in Athens to give birth, and it became the first recorded case of thousands of asylum seekers residing in overcrowded camps across the country.

The ministry said in a statement that all the cases did not show symptoms, adding that it was continuing its examination. "The movement was restricted to and from Ritsuna camp, which is located 75 km northeast of Athens, and it includes 2500 people for 14 days a day, the police will carry out the procedures."

Earlier this week, authorities were trying to find out where the woman had picked up the infection, and was looking into the possibility that she had picked it up from the hospital.

Sources said that the camp in central Greece includes an area to isolate those infected with the disease, if needed.

Greece recorded the first case of the virus at the end of February and the number of infected so far is 1415, and the virus has killed five.

More than 40,000 asylum-seekers live in overcrowded camps on the islands around the mainland of Greece in conditions that aid organizations say are appalling, and the government itself has described it as a "ticking health bomb".

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Wednesday evening that Greece is ready to protect its islands since no case has been registered so far, but the European Union must do more to improve conditions in the camps and transfer refugees to other countries.

"The circumstances are far from ideal, but I must also point out that Greece mainly deals with this problem alone ... We did not get the amount of support we wanted from the European Union," Kyriakos said.
